Wasn't sure how far I was going to get today. I knew I'd have a couple of interruptions for sure, but things actually went pretty well. I cranked out another chapter and started in on the next one. But I'm getting to the point of the story that I don't have planned out as well. This is usually where I start running into issues with meeting that word count. But we'll see.I have a better grasp of where I want to go now than I did yesterday. I spent a few minutes today writing down the motivations for the three factions involved in this story. Essentially my protagonists get involved in a much larger struggle they know nothing about. At first I just had some vague idea of these antagonists being... well antagonists. I needed to know more than that, so I wrote a few sentences about what was motivating them, and that actually helped create some additional conflict in the story.
The thing is, my protagonists don't know why they were hired, it's not their job to know why. But once they find out why (because what is the fun if they don't know) then it will impact how they react to the antagonists. It should make the later portions of the book more interesting since one group of antagonists is actually trying to protect people and the protagonists are actually getting in the way without knowing it.
And my characters did their first bit of off roading today. I had originally planned for a dialogue scene in a club. But things went awry and it turned out to be a dialogue scene in a bed with naked characters! Wow. Didn't see that coming!
Anyway, a good night of writing, but it did feel like I lost some steam as I started the next (unplotted) chapter.

Funny, in my life whenever I plan an evening with naked people in bed, it typically ends up just as dialogue in a club. I usually see it coming though.
One of the hardest things about writing is self-judgment. None of us turns out Shakespeare on the first draft – not even Shakespeare. A word count goal therefore is handy in keeping an author going on something that strikes even him/her as dubious. With luck one has something at the end that will shine when polished.
Now if only we could work out a story that is in a club where there are naked people and a bed (they don't have to be in the bed, that is optional).
You are so right. It is one of the reasons I like NaNoWriMo. The deadline forces me to write and write and write and not muddle too much on details that I can flesh out later. I've gotten some good stuff out of this, and so far I'm having a good time with it.
